Mexico City is preparing for the Day of the Dead festivities, anticipating the attendance of 2 million people this year and increasing security measures with the introduction of barriers at the event. The Grand Day of the Dead Parade and the Mega Catrina Procession are two of the most awaited massive events.
The Mega Procession will feature 37 thematic contingents and approximately 13,600 people. Among the highlighted contingents are "Candles of the Isthmus" from Oaxaca, "Mexico on the Skin" with traditional costumes from states and municipalities, "Balloon Fashion" paying tribute to balloon art, and the traditional Catrinas of José Guadalupe Posada.
Jessica Esquivias Rodríguez, the producer of the event, mentioned: "The ‘Balloon Fashion’ contingent, innovating and paying tribute to all the people dedicated to balloon art. The traditional Catrinas of José Guadalupe Posada, which this year open the Mega Catrina Procession; quinceañeras, brides and grooms, Latin rhythms, among many other contingents joining the Mega Procession."
The Grand Day of the Dead Parade will take place on Saturday, November 2nd, starting at the Lion's Gate, covering eight kilometers, and culminating in the capital's Zócalo. More than 5,800 participants are expected in 37 contingents, including floats, musical troupes, mojigangas, and prominent groups from different boroughs of Mexico City.
Additionally, floats will be presented in honor of figures such as Rosario Castellanos, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Lucha Reyes. Troupes like Batalá and Las Machine Band, as well as representations from various associations and international delegations, will also be part of the parade.
The Mega Catrina Procession will take place on October 27, departing from the Angel of Independence towards the Zócalo. Citizens and visitors are getting ready to join the celebration with costumes and participation in these iconic Day of the Dead events in the Mexican capital.
